In the world of tough competition between the auto manufacturers, the focus is shifting towards providing better performance and improving engine efficiency. So, most of the auto manufacturers are digging in deep finding a way in getting more mileage from their vehicles. For that, the focus went on to the engine oil. General Motors, Ford Motor Co, Chrysler Group and most other auto manufacturers are rolling their cars for the year 2011 with the latest generation engine oil known with their own industry standards. These new generation oils will protect the vehicles from wear and tear, produce more horse power from small engines and increase the efficiency of super chargers and also the turbo chargers. The most potential property being increase in the mileage between the intervals of oil change, present focus of attraction is the mileage. One important but unanswered question is the cost of the oil. Will that be reachable to the common man? We should wait and see…

The committee formed with the members from Chrysler, Ford, GM and JAMA have approved the new generation of engine oils to be released into the market. These new generation oils are stronger in the formulation which is expected to give more fuel efficiency, less emissions and cleanliness. GM’s-dexos1 and Ford’s-GF5 has to pass the tests under the supervision of petroleum institute of America. Mandatory tests from ACEA for GM, it has to pass the tests from EAMA instead of tests from American petroleum institute. GM’s oil has to pass the sludge of Mercedes and Opel’s fuel economy tests. Similarly the oils certified by GF5 are subjected to undergo a different set of tests.

Regulations

New generation engine oils should follow the regulations formed by the government for the lower emissions and high fuel efficiency. The power train lubrication and fuel engineers of General Motors started working on the oil four years back. Their main goal to set the specifications for oil that should meet the requirements of all the vehicles of GM. Newer version of oil also has been released in the European markets early this year for the diesel vehicles. These oils efficiently work for increased mileages in between the oil changes. GM did not mention the mileage life clearly but the drivers are recommended to change the oil as per the recommendations of oil monitoring system. On the other hand, Ford mentions that at least a travel of 10000 miles is possible between the oil changes with GF5. Ford has made more changes to the engine it uses with the usage of aluminum for the engine components and size of the oil pan has been increased. Ford also uses the life monitoring system for oil with which the owner will come to know the time of oil change.

The new generation engine oils of GM and Ford can also be used in the older cars but as per the manual. Customers may not be able to see the change immediately after the oil change, but the protection and the cleanliness of the engine are the major benefits.
